Challenges in game distribution for the Chinese market
In recent years, the market for online games, including smartphones, has been expanding in China, making China an attractive market for the Japanese game industry as well.
However, when Chinese users access Japanese game services, there are issues with the unstable network between Japan and China, which can cause delays in the display of games, making it difficult to play them satisfactorily.
Additionally, if you want to distribute games by setting up a server in China, you will need to establish a local subsidiary and obtain certifications such as an "ICP license*1" and the "version number*2" of the game title. Currently, there are major hurdles for Japanese companies to enter the market.
In order to solve these issues, SB Cloud, Beyond, and Game Server Services have started providing cloud services specializing in game distribution to China.
*1 ICP license is a registration system required for websites distributing content from servers in China. Only Chinese companies are allowed to apply for ICP license registration, and if a foreign company wants to publish a website, it must establish a local subsidiary or business office in China before applying.
*2 The edition number is a license number issued by the National Press, Publication, Radio and Television Administration that is required when publishing a game in China. Similar to the ICP license, applications for approval are limited to Chinese companies only.
Service overview
This service uses Alibaba Cloud's international leased line service "Global Accelerator" and Game Server Services' game server platform "Game Server Services (GS2)" to deliver games to China with low latency. It provides an environment where you can easily develop games without the need to operate or manage servers.
"Global Accelerator" is a service that speeds up and stabilizes access to applications from overseas users through communication using the global backbone of Alibaba Cloud, which has regions (data centers) around the world.
By using "Global Accelerator," an endpoint node is installed in Alibaba Cloud's Hong Kong region and connected to an endpoint node in the Tokyo region via a dedicated line. communication.
Additionally, since the server is not located in China, there is no need to obtain certification such as an "ICP license".
"GS2" is a Backend as a Service (BaaS) specialized for game development. We provide functions commonly used in game development as APIs, such as user account management, billing currency management, and event schedule management. Server operation and management is performed on the GS2 side, so by using GS2, game developers can easily develop games even if they are not familiar with server operation and management. You can focus on making the game more interesting.
