The second “Home de LT Tournament” is being held! Remote work ultimate edition [Beyond study session]

My name is Kai Fujisawa, and I work in public relations and recruitment. I'm addicted to standing desks

With remote work becoming a common practice these days, the 31st Beyond Study Group held a Lightning Talk event with the theme "Let's brag about our remote work environments!"

Title: "Home LT Competition - Those who have mastered the remote work environment"

In April 2020, we held a lightning talk event on the theme of remote work. A year has passed, and as desk environments are likely to be in order by now, six people who have improved their remote work, including desks, chairs, cameras, lighting, and mindsets, gave lightning talks

There are six speakers

  1. Beyond Co., Ltd. Yoichi Bandai
  2. Michitaro Nakajima, Yahoo Japan Corporation
  3. mochikoAsTech
  4. Microsoft Japan Co., Ltd. Odasho (Shohei Oda)
  5. Beyond Co., Ltd. Yosuke Goto
  6. shibomb Hiroki Shibahara

Until I had a work room that my wife would say, "You haven't been leaving your room lately."

The first speaker will be Bandai from Beyond's System Development Department

Several items that are important for engineers to use when working were introduced, such as a round stool that he initially used but then switched to an AKReacing because it hurt his back, and a homemade cardboard PC stand that is said to be the best (?) PC stand in the world

The one that caught my eye was this "cactus that absorbs electromagnetic waves."

I wanted one, so I searched for "electromagnetic cactus" on Amazon, but it was out of stock, so I'll just keep exposing myself to electromagnetic waves while I work for a while

The second person is Michitaro Nakajima from Yahoo! Corporation

Michitaro, who also runs Mixleap, said that his office is so comfortable that he has relatively little experience working remotely, so he talked about the standing desks

Apparently, "the brain and body need to get tired at the same time," so if you work while sitting for long periods of time, only your brain will get tired

Michitaro, who started working while standing for health reasons, said he was concerned about the stares of people around him who worked while sitting, but he said it was important to stick to his belief that "everyone will stand up someday" and to just get on with his work without worrying about what others think

I was so impressed, I tried setting up an improvised standing desk the next day, working on a pile of cardboard boxes I'd gathered together. I somehow felt like my mind worked faster while standing

Above all, it gives you just the right amount of fatigue, so if you're tired of sitting down to work, be sure to give it a try

Rather than thinking, "I'll do this once the situation calms down," let's make the present more comfortable

The third person is mochikoAsTech (we called her Mochiko)

She has written numerous technical books, and one of our in-house infrastructure engineers was a fan of hers, so we asked her to speak, and she gladly accepted

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we should stop thinking things like "I'll buy that when the situation calms down" or "I'll just hold off for now" and instead focus on the present and organize our desk environment, which will ultimately improve our work efficiency and help us relieve small stresses immediately. All the speakers nodded in agreement with Mochiko's wonderful idea

When I asked Mochiko how many Ethernet hubs she had purchased, she said they were convenient. I was surprised to hear about seven

It seems that people who are experts on their desk environment try out various products until they find one that suits them, and then buy multiple copies of the one that suits them best

The story of how I ended up living in my self-built PC

Fourth place goes to Odasho (Oda Shohei) from Microsoft Japan Co., Ltd

Odasho is a gadget lover, and as expected, his home-built PC is also quite impressive

There were also plenty of actress lights installed, and I started to feel anxious that I should buy one myself soon

The title "Living in a Self-Built PC" means "I made the lights in my house glow like a self-built PC." I played around with changing the light bulbs to different colors, and even while I was sleeping, the motion sensor reacted, so the room would light up in rainbow colors just by turning over in my sleep (lol).

If you love building your own PC, why not try living in one like Odasho?

The fifth speaker will be Goto from Beyond's Web Services Division

If you want to make your room stylish to make working from home more comfortable, the important thing is to use "interior greenery and indirect lighting."

Goto, who has experience as a photographer, has a strong preference for lighting, and gave a lecture on how to create dappled sunlight and introduced some recommended plants

With just some large plants and indirect lighting, you can create this kind of effect

There was a rainbow-colored room like Odasho's in the previous LT, and a jungle-like room like Goto's, and it was fascinating to see how different the spaces created by different people can be!

Equipment to make things look good, improving work efficiency at home, and debauchery is also good

Finally, we have a word from Hiroki Shibahara

Shibahara, a freelance engineer, uses his desk at home as his production environment, rather than in an office

Not only are high-definition cameras, green screens, and standing desks installed, but in winter a cushion and desk combination that's so lazy people can lie down. As someone whose feet get swollen from the cold, I was very envious of the fact that people could work while lying down.

In addition, Shibahara has published a list of the items he has purchased since the COVID-19 pandemic on his website, so if you're looking to improve your desk environment, be sure to check it out

I've uploaded LT videos to YouTube

The video of the LT has been uploaded to Beyond's YouTube channel "Biyomaru Channel,"

Beyond Study Groups are held regularly online

Beyond Study Group is a study group that specializes in technical topics such as infrastructure and development, but we also occasionally hold meetings on non-technical topics like this

The event in April will focus on development topics, so feel free to join us, whether you're an engineer or not!
