[🍁News from Toronto] Language School Edition 🏫

Hello there! This is Inusuki from the System Solutions Department.
I've been sending out reports from Toronto in a relay format (unofficially), and this is the ninth installment.
This time, I'd like to share my experiences attending language school in Canada while working!

I'll take it easy

School Introduction

Inusuki attended Hansa Language Centre , which is within a 10-minute walk from Eglinton Station.

In addition to English, students can take classes in 10 other languages, including French and German, tailored to their language level

Although the class schedule is somewhat set, depending on the language you are taking, online classes and evening classes are available, so even busy working people can take classes

Inusuki was taking night English classes, so he attended Yonge Campus twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays

Why did you go to language school?

Possible reasons include using English in daily work or to broaden one's horizons, but in Inusuki's case the reason is quite simple

That's because I was lonely .

Yes, I was lonely. Being alone is lonely

However, Inusuki's English level is not very high

Even in the workplace, you only have the opportunity to read and write, and there aren't many opportunities to speak

However, language exchanges and the like are too difficult to get into, so the honest reason is that I wanted to create an opportunity to speak with people who have the same level of English as Inusuki but who don't understand Japanese

Preparing for admission

The documents required for admission are as follows:

  1. passport
  2. eTA number
  3. Overseas insurance policy number

In addition to these, there were also online tests for class placement

The test only covers reading and writing, so it may not be an accurate assessment, but if it does not suit your level, you can change classes

Let's enroll!

Humans tend to get nervous whenever there is a change in their environment

Moreover, when dealing with people who do not speak your first language, you have no choice but to get through using words, body language, and passion

With all due respect to Zakiyama and Degawa, Inusuki also made up his mind

~ Skit below ~

Dog: "Hello"

Teacher: Um, what about you?

Dog: "I'm Inusuki, nice to meet you."

Teacher: "Oh, Inusuki. Sit wherever you like. How are you doing?"

Dog: (thumbs up) That's great

Teacher: "That's great. Where are you from?"

Dog: "Japan"

There's a tense atmosphere in the class

Teacher: "Hmm, Japan? We don't have any Japanese students. Sorry, but could you please leave?"

Dogs (is that even a thing in this day and age?)

Dog: "Gelow? Ok (trying to get up)"

Teacher: "Wait a minute. You've got to be kidding me."

Dog: "Hey guys!"

It's passion. (After this, we gave each other a high five.)

A look at the class

The lesson begins with casual conversation, followed by the distribution of teaching materials, vocabulary building and listening practice, and then discussion

Since he frequently changed partners, it was a constant challenge for Inusuki, who is shy

Especially during the discussions, I felt frustrated that I had so much to say but couldn't put it into words... I think I was able to get my point across, but it wasn't enough

By the way, most of the students in the class were from Europe (there were people ranging in age from 18 to 40)

During class, there were topics such as communicating with students from different countries, and Inusuki was in high demand every time

Teacher, please be careful. It looks like it's going to come off

thoughts

Frankly speaking, since I only practiced for a limited period of time, it may not have made much difference to my English level

However, I no longer feel as uncomfortable with English as I did before, and I feel that I have become more enthusiastic about communicating in English

Furthermore, I was able to achieve my goal of providing an opportunity to speak with people who have a similar level of English but who cannot speak Japanese, and it also helped to increase my motivation to learn English

I will continue to study languages with the mindset of "Say something! Do something!", while never forgetting to respect others

If you have even the slightest interest in English, consider attending a language school. I'm sure you'll have fun

That's all from Inusuki👋
