[🍁News from Toronto] Delicious Vietnamese Food 🍜🍜🍜

table of contents
Thank you for your support.
This is Inu from the System Solutions Department.
I was on a business trip to Toronto, Canada until recently.
Our company has a system that allows employees to go on a three-month training trip to Canada
Taking advantage of the time difference between Japan and Canada, our Canadian office staff are in charge
of server operation and maintenance during the Japanese night shift (11:00 PM to 8:00 AM the following day) Despite providing a 24/7 service, our Japanese team members are able to work without night shifts thanks to the support of our wonderful Canadian team members from the other side of the world.
Please also take a look at our introduction page about our Canadian base →→→ Canada Edition - Beyond Recruitment Site ~ Making the world a little easier ~
So, I'd like to share some of my memories of the Vietnamese food I ate with these wonderful members.

5 Vietnamese restaurants
Here are five Vietnamese restaurants I visited in Toronto.
nam 2 Unionville

We arrived at this store, located on the outskirts of downtown Markham, about a 15-minute drive northwest from Markham, where our Canadian office is located.
The menu for three extremely hungry infrastructure engineers is as follows:
- Phở bò tái (beef pho)
- Bun riêu cua (Crab bun)
- Gỏi xoài (mango salad)
- Bánh tráng cuốn tôm thịt (shrimp and meat spring rolls)
- Bánh xèo
Hmm...maybe the amount is a little too much...? ? (^_^;)

The food above is Gỏi xoài (mango salad).
It tastes great with the Bánh phồng tom (white shrimp crackers) placed around the salad.

In the foreground is a crab 🦀, in the back left is Phở bò tái (beef pho), in the middle is Bún riêu cua (crab bun), and to the right of that is Bánh tráng cuốn tôm thịt (shrimp and meat spring rolls).
Bún riêu cua (crab bun)
Bun rieu, also known as bun lieu or bun giu, is a Vietnamese noodle dish made with rice vermicelli in a tomato soup.
There are several varieties, including bun rieu cua, bun rieu ca, and bun rieu oc, depending on the ingredients used.
Source: Wikipedia
The typical version is a bowl of crab paste topped with a small amount of crushed crab (source: Inu), but the Bun riêu cua at this restaurant comes with a whole grilled crab, which is eaten with noodles and soup, which was quite a surprise.
This super luxurious style of Bun riêu cua was something I'd never seen before in either Vietnam or Japan, and it was delicious.

The Bánh xeo was also surprisingly big.
The Pho Restaurant

This store is located in downtown Markham, about a 10-minute drive north from Markham, where our Canadian office is located.
Surprisingly...our GTA's Don , or Saint-Xian, is actually a huge fan of the Vietnamese dish pho.

The Vietnamese dishes we had this time are as follows:
- Phở bò (Beef Pho)
- Phở bò Huế (Eat pho with Bun bò Huế soup)
- Papaya salad

This is Gỏi đu đủ (papaya salad). Unlike the previous mango salad, this one is made with papaya.

An interesting thing about this restaurant is that you can customize your pho to your liking by scanning the QR code provided on each table to open the menu (above is the actual ordering screen).
Here's what you can customize:
- Size (Regular or Large)
- Noodle type (e.g. Phở or Bún)
- Soup type (beef-based, chicken-based, Huế soup...etc)
- Type of meat (cut, etc.)
- With or without green onions
- Extra meat and noodles
Wow... I've never seen anything like this in Japan or Vietnam, so I was totally surprised when I saw it for the first time Σ(・ω・ノ)ノ!
↓My order details
- Regular size
- Fresh Noodle
- Beef
- Huế style soup
↓Result

Delicious!
When you think of pho, it's usually a clear beef (or chicken) soup like the one in the top photo, but this time I adapted it to my liking, and was able to enjoy the unusual combination of eating pho in a Bún bò Huế soup called Phở bò Huế.

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, do no evil...?

Nang Saigon

We arrived at the shop, located in downtown Toronto, a five-minute walk from the green Bathurst subway station.
Here are the dishes we had this time.
- Pho with Rare Beef
- Crab Tomato Noodle Soup - Bun Rieu
- Coconut Matcha
It was a shame that there was no Vietnamese menu.

The aroma is amazing! The top is pho and the bottom is Bun Rieu. The tofu and tomatoes are large and very filling.
Bun riêu cua (crab bun) was also available at the first store, but at this store it is only available to order on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, which was very lucky for us.

It was Coconut Matcha. It was the first time I'd seen this combination, but the matcha had a distinctly Japanese matcha flavor and went really well with the coconut.
Pho Toronto

The shop is located a little northwest of downtown Toronto, at the intersection of Victoria Park Ave and Lawrence Ave East.
Even though it was midday and the restaurant was empty... (^_^;) I was a bit disappointed, but the menu I ordered was as follows.
- Phở bò (Beef pho, I forgot which one)
- Bun thịt nướng (mixed noodles with grilled meat and bun)

The top is pho and the bottom is bun thịt nướng (mixed noodles with grilled meat and bun), the meat is huge!
What is Bún thịt nướng?
Bun thit nung, or bún thit nuong, is a popular Vietnamese dish originating from southern Vietnam, consisting of cold rice noodles topped with grilled pork, fresh herbs such as basil and mint, fresh salad, and bean sprouts called ghia, and served with spring rolls called cha yó. The dish is tossed in fish sauce called nuoc mam.
Source: Wikipedia
This is a dish that you can enjoy when you're not in the mood for hot soup, by mixing the noodles with vegetables, meat, and sauce for a refreshing meal.

By the way, the ordering method was to write the number of the dish on a piece of paper, which was very Saizeriya style.
Lang Chai

The last one is located southwest from the office, heading west on Steeles Ave East and then south on Midland Ave.
The interior design of this shop was really nice, but I forgot to take a photo ☆彡 (See it on Google Maps)

This is what the food we had this time was like.
- Phở tái - Small size (beef pho)
- Bún chả cá Hải Phòng (Fish noodle soup from Hai Phong city)
- Gỏi xoài tôm nướng (grilled shrimp and mango salad)
This restaurant specializes in serving cuisine from Hải Phòng City (Vietnam's fourth largest city, located east of the capital, Hanoi City), and Bún chả cá Hải Phòng is one of its dishes.
It features a tomato-based soup with fried white fish, Vietnamese fish cakes, tomatoes, and green onions.
Other Hải Phòng specialties include Nem cua bể (deep-fried crab spring rolls).

Wonderful Vietnamese goods.

A Shinto altar is always found in Vietnamese shops.
This shop has nine locations across Canada, which shows how successful it is.
