Summary of domestic million-shipping titles

This is Haraoka from Beyond.

joined CESA (Computer Entertainment Association) in October ( https://beyondjapan.com/cesa ), and at that time I received the following book.

2017CESA Gaming White Paper

This book contains various statistical data on the game industry, and this time I would like to focus on one of them, ``Japan's all-time million-shipping titles.''

First of all, the TOP 10 of all-time rankings (as of 2016)

Top 10 million dollar titles of all time

rank title name Number of shipments Manufacturer platform Release year
- Pokemon series
(red, green, blue, Pikachu, gold, silver, crystal)
23 million bottles Nintendo game boy 1996
1 super mario bros 6.81 million pieces Nintendo Famicom 1985
2 New Super Mario Bros. 6.49 million books Nintendo DS 2006
3 Yokai Watch 2
Original/Honke/Shinuchi
5.95 million bottles level five 3DS 2014
4 Pokemon
Diamond and Pearl
5.85 million bottles Nintendo DS 2006
5 Pokemon
black and white
5.54 million books Nintendo DS 2010
6 Pokemon
Ruby Sapphire
5.4 million bottles Nintendo game boy
advance
2002
7 Come on Animal Crossing 5.35 million bottles Nintendo DS 2005
8 Animal Crossing: New Horizons 5.21 million books Nintendo 3DS 2012
9 Adult DS training to train your brain more 5.1 million bottles Nintendo DS 2005
10 monster hunter portable 3rd 4.8 million bottles capcom PSP 2010
Nintendo is overwhelming. For some reason, the Game Boy Pokemon series was compiled, and although it was treated as an exception, the cumulative total of 23 million units was by far the number one! When it comes to rankings per game, Super Mario Bros. is definitely number one. Second place goes to New Super Mario Bros.
Surprisingly, the third place went to Level Five's Yokai Watch 2! It's amazing that he has broken into 3rd place on the all-time list. After that, the Pokemon series and Animal Crossing series followed, giving you a brain-training experience, but I was a little surprised that the next thing other than Nintendo that made it into the rankings was Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 and Dragon Quest.

There are a total of 232 million-selling titles in Japan. I have summarized them by manufacturer, platform, and year.

Million title ranking by manufacturer

rank Manufacturer Number of titles Number of sales Average number
1 Nintendo 114 28541 250
2 square enix 46 9390 204
3 SIE (Sony) 16 2363 148
4 bandai namco 16 2141 134
5 capcom 12 2598 217
6 konami 10 1319 132
7 level five 7 1522 217
8 ascii 4 540 135
9 hudson 4 480 120
10 koei 4 453 113
11 sega games 2 241 121
12 BPS 1 181 181
Jaleco 1 158 158
gung ho 1 150 150
D3 1 101 101
mixi 1 100 100
Sammy 1 100 100
Taito 1 100 100
After all, Nintendo has an overwhelming number of titles and sales. As expected, 2nd place goes to Square Enix. The number of million titles is very high compared to other manufacturers. Third to fifth place goes to Sony, Bandai Namco, and Capcom, but these three manufacturers are quite close in terms of number of titles and number of sales. However, Capcom ranks second in terms of average number of titles, which means they have a lot of big hit titles. For some reason, Konami's titles weren't in the rankings, so I'm just referring to the wiki Level-5 also ranks second in terms of average number of shots. This is largely due to the sales volume of Yokai Watch, but there are also two Inazuma Eleven copies included. The oldest title was released in 2007, so seven million-selling titles in 10 years is amazing.

By the way, I've never heard of BPS, but they are the makers of Tetris. Personally, I was nostalgic that Jaleco's Moero Professional Baseball was included.

Million title ranking by platform

rank platform Number of titles Total number Average number
1 Famicom 39 7203 185
2 Nintendo DS 38 9183 242
3 playstation 30 5057 169
4 super nes 29 5571 192
5 Nintendo 3DS 22 5669 258
6 game boy 18 5472 304
7 playstation 2 18 3096 172
8 Wii 14 3558 254
9 nintendo 64 10 1444 144
10 game boy advance 4 1204 301
11 WiiU 4 551 138
12 PSP 2 580 290
13 PlayStation 3 1 180 180
game cube 1 151 151
sega saturn 1 130 130
PlayStation 4/Xbox one 1 110 110
The Famicom came in first in terms of million-selling titles by platform, so it must have had a lot of well-selling games. The 3DS is in second place, but it is in first place in terms of sales.

Game Boy ranked first in terms of average number of games, and surprisingly, Game Boy Advance came in second. Looking at PSP, 3DS, and DS in 3rd, 4th, and 6th place, it seems that portable machines tend to be more likely to be mega-hits. Pokemon seems to have a big influence as well.

Million title tally by age group

era Total number Number of titles Average number of titles Annual average number
1980s (1983~) 7681 40 192 1097
1990s 15895 80 199 1590
2000s 16982 76 223 1698
2010s (~2016) 8601 36 239 1229

Looking at million titles by year, the number of titles was in the 1990s, and the average number of titles was in the 2000s. Are you saying that the last 20 years have been the heyday of the consumer era?

In the 2010s, the number of titles suddenly decreased, but the average number of titles sold per million titles was actually the highest. I think the structure is changing to one where big titles can be sold intensively.

2017 million title

There are currently three million-selling titles in 2017.

Dragon
Quest

*See below Famitsu.com Sales Ranking TOP30
 4Gamer.net Weekly Sales Ranking Plus

The 3 million copies of Dragon Quest is amazing. It looks like Splatoon 2 will continue to grow. As for Switch software, his sales of 740,000 copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and 600,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are slowly increasing, so sales may reach 1 million in the future. Also, Super Mario Odyssey will be released this weekend, so it looks like it's going to sell for a million as well.

summary

Judging from million-selling titles, Nintendo is still strong! is. Personally, I found it interesting that Level-5 ranked quite high in the rankings, and that he was more likely to release million-selling titles on portable machines. If I have a chance, I would like to compile other data.
