[Must-see for beginners] What is hardware? You can understand all the technical terms! Brief explanation

Hello.
My name is Kita from Beyond Co., Ltd. and I've been really into the Great Cat War lately.

Last time, I blogged about
the server I wanted to explain the hardware part in a little more detail.

This time, I will try to explain it in an easy-to-understand manner, including diagrams, so that even beginners can understand it clearly.

What is hardware?

Hardware is "hardware" in English, and some people also call it hardware.
There seems to be no problem with either name, but personally I prefer hardware.

Simply put, hardware refers to the visible parts of a machine, such as the computer itself, display, keyboard, printer, mouse, etc.

To explain in more detail, the equipment that makes up the entire computer system is also called hardware.
Basically, not just one, but multiple devices (hardware) work together, and the computer itself and its peripherals are collectively referred to as hardware.

Conversely, software refers to invisible software, and programs such as Windows, Word, and Chrome are collectively called software.

In other words, computers such as smartphones and PCs that we use every day are made up of hardware and software.

Hardware type

Next,
we will provide a detailed explanation of the types of hardware used to process information and record data on computers such as PCs and smartphones

motherboard

  • Electrical circuit board required to configure a computer
  • The basis of computers such as personal computers and smartphones
  • The hardware necessary for a computer to operate is attached to the motherboard.

CPU (central processing unit)

  • Receives instructions from peripheral devices such as hard disks and memory, and controls operations and performs calculations.
  • If compared to a human, it plays the role of the "brain"
  • Significantly related to computer performance

Memory (main storage)

  • A medium that stores data, also called "main memory"
  • In a computer, the location where running programs and data are stored
  • Comparing it to a physical object, it plays the role of a "desk".
  • The higher the capacity, the higher the work efficiency.
  • There are two types: RAM and ROM.

About the difference between RAM and ROM

  1. RAM (Random Access Memory)
・Working memory used for CPU calculations
・Basically, when it is called memory, it refers to this
It has the characteristic that when the power is turned off, the saved data also disappears.

  2. This includes
    ROM (Read Only Memory)
, write load/readable memory - Data does not disappear even if the power is turned off

Hard disk (auxiliary storage device)

  • medium for storing computer data
  • All stored data is located

  • so it is also called ``auxiliary storage'' because it helps prevent data from being lost.
  • Processing speed is extremely slow compared to RAM (memory)
  • Comparing it to a physical object, it plays the role of a ``bookshelf.''
  • The more capacity you have, the more data you can store
  • Weak against physical shock and break easily
  • to set up a RAID configuration when using it for business purposes.

SSD (auxiliary storage device)

  • A medium for storing computer data, similar to a hard disk
  • It has a characteristic that processing speed is dramatically faster than that of a hard disk.
  • Strong against physical shock
  • However, the data capacity that can be stored is small and the price is high.
  • Recently, this has become more popular than hard disks.
  • There is also an M.2 SSD, is smaller and has faster transfer speeds than traditional SSDs.

overall image

Once again, we have explained the hardware required for a computer to operate, so
at the end, we will briefly explain the overall image of each piece of hardware.

I explained that the CPU is the brain, the memory is on the desk, and the hard disk is the drawer.
I think it's easier to understand if you visualize the actual sequence of reading a book.

If you explain the flow using a book as data, I think the order would be as follows.

  1. Select the book you want to read from the drawer (data is retrieved from the hard disk)
  2. Place the book on your desk for immediate access (load data into memory)
  3. Start reading a book, understand the content, and get the necessary information (processed by the CPU)

In this way, each piece of hardware has a role, and each piece of hardware works together to be used in our daily lives.

summary

So far, what is hardware? From this point of view, we explained in detail the types, examples, and roles of hardware.

Hardware refers to the visible parts of machines, such as computers, displays, keyboards, mice, printers, etc., and is an inseparable part of our lives.

I hope this article helps you understand even a little bit what hardware is.
