Hello, this is Goto from the Web Services Division
I went to see "City Trial Japan 2020 in OSAKA," which was held on Saturday, November 28, 2020
Do you all like sports?
This may seem like a surprise after asking you about it, but I don't usually do any sports
I did push-ups the other day for the first time in a while, and I was out of breath after just 5
I felt a little annoyed, so10 repsしたら2日間筋肉痛になりました。
As you can see, even though I have absolutely no connection to sports or muscles, there was a sports viewing event that even someone like me could enjoy
That'sCity Trial Japan.
The attitude of athletes who continue to challenge difficult courses in an attempt to surpass their own limits
The minder keeps the riders and their machines in the best condition during the competition
*Minder: A support person who accompanies the athletes during the competition and takes care of them and their machines when they have trouble
Those scenes are so intense that you can't take your eyes off them, and it's incredibly moving to watch the athletes overcome seemingly impossible courses with superhuman skills .
In this article, I will share my perspective on what happened on the day of City Trial Japan 2020 in Osaka and what was noteworthy
What is the motorcycle racing sport "Trial"?

Some of you might be wondering , "What exactly is a 'trial'?"
Regarding the trial, the following is quoted from the official City Trial Japan website:
Trials is a competition in which riders compete to see who can navigate a course with complex elevation changes and inclines while remaining on their motorcycles. There are two types: outdoor trials, which take place in natural settings, and indoor trials, which are held in stadiums or arenas with artificial obstacles.

*The City Trial Japan website was created by our company, Beyond
As such, trials is a sport using motorcycles, but it is not a race; rather, it is a competition in which riders compete to see who can perform the most accurate techniques within a time limit
Points are deducted if you put your feet down or get off the machine, so the difference between winning and losing is whether you can complete the course with the fewest deduction points as stipulated in these competitions
What is City Trial Japan? How is it different from traditional trials?

City Trial Japan is a trial riding competition held in urban areas to increase visibility and raise the profile of trial riding , a sport that is still relatively unknown in Japan despite the presence of many world-class riders .
In 2018, the first tournament was held at Tsutenkaku Shopping Arcade, a landmark representing Osaka
Here's the video from that time:
I had seen this video before going to see City Trial Japan 2020 in Osaka, which was held this year
I was very surprised, thinking, "Wait, is this how you ride a motorcycle? And in such a big city, and on such a bold course?"
All the players are performing in the real world the kind of light and bold driving maneuvers that we have only ever seen on a racing game screen
The moment I saw this video, I decided, "Oh, this looks fun. I'm going to go see it."
This was the trigger that led this shut-in guy who could only do five push-ups to enter the sporty world of trials
By the way, thinking about it now, it's a pretty embarrassing truth, but even though I don't lead a sporty lifestyle at all, I have the habit of drinking protein every day
Then try doing a few more push-ups
City Trial Japan 2020 in OSAKA
City Trial Japan 2020 in Osakawas held at the Festival Plaza in Expo Commemoration Park.
It's located just behind the Tower of the Sun
On the day of the competition, in addition to the competition area, there were also special booths set up by sponsors, a trial experience corner, and food stalls offering a variety of food, creating a very lively atmosphere
You can see photos and videos from City Trial Japan 2020 in Osaka on our official Instagram account
However, I was also able to take a few photos from the audience seats, so I would like to introduce a selection of them below

This is the venue for the tournament
This was my first time seeing the back of the Tower of the Sun, what do you all think?
As the words suggest, I felt a little happy as I finally got to know the other side of the Tower of the Sun
And, incredibly, our company's Beyond logo was even displayed at the tournament venue !

Beyond is a sponsor of City Trial Japan 2020 in Osaka
Next, we will show you some photos of the athletes actually riding their bikes

*A minder will always be on standby near the athlete to be on hand in case of a fall or machine malfunction
For the players, minders are very important people who can influence the score in the tournament

This is definitely not a field you can ride a motorcycle on
The field at the venue was set to such a high level of difficulty that even top athletes would have a hard time mastering it perfectly
And as some of you may have noticed by now, it seems that it is now the default for City Trial Japan riders to ride their bikes with at least one wheel in the air
An incredible sense of balance
Or rather, isn't it scary?
Needless to say, this is a world that I, who can only ride a unicycle for about three seconds at a time, could never enter no matter how hard I tried

It's so high! I can't believe I can keep riding my bike at such a high altitude..
It looks like it's going to take off into the sky. It reminds me of a certain Hollywood movie

Hey, what's going on with gravity right now?
For some reason, he's swimming on the bike. At incredible speed
City Trial Japan is a formal competition where participants compete for rankings based on points , but even so, as you can see in this photo, some athletes occasionally put on performances for the audience, and I was thrilled by their professional spirit as performers.
[Summary] My thoughts on the appeal of City Trial Japan
I felt that City Trial Japan is a sport that anyone can enjoy, even if they don't know the detailed rules or don't have a habit of watching sports
I especially feel this when I actually go and see it
The audience is amazed by the athletes' advanced skills
The background music at the venue further heightens the tension and excitement in the atmosphere
The host will provide live commentary, providing passionate and easy-to-understand explanations of the players' techniques and courses
The sound of engines echoed throughout the venue. Frustrated faces. Faces filled with a sense of accomplishment
Even if they fail, the athletes quickly recover and calmly complete the next course, demonstrating their professional spirit
And the tacit understanding and bond between the players and minders was evident many times throughout the tournament
I am strongly attracted to them
Now that I've written this much, I can't help but think that the above text sounds a bit like the lines everyone says in turn at the end of a graduation ceremony
In short, City Trial Japan is a drama that transcends the realm of watching sports .
I'm sure that if you get to know other sports in depth, you'll find that they each have their own wonderful drama
However,City Trial Japan, among the many sports, is one that is easy to understand and enjoy.
