TOEIC study tips from the most uncool guy on Beyond!!

Hello! This is Shimeji from the Systems Solutions Department.
It's almost been 8 months since I joined the company.
Time really flies, doesn't it?

I previously worked on Japanese-to-English translation projects.
Actually, it's incredibly difficult...

Translating from English to Japanese is relatively easy, but
translating from Japanese to English is incredibly difficult...
I struggle with how to express unique Japanese expressions in English...

Do you know what the TOEIC test is?

If I hadn't come across this test, I probably wouldn't have been able to join Beyond, so it's an important exam for me

Let's all aim for a high score on the TOEIC and change our careers for the better!
(Join Beyond!!)

What is TOEIC?

TOEIC is a globally recognized test that assesses English communication skills for non-native English speakers. It
measures listening and reading abilities, two of the four English skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The exam consists of 200 questions with a time limit of 120 minutes, and
those unfamiliar with the format may find it difficult to complete.

The results are displayed as a score from 0 to 990.
Your ability is flexibly reflected in the score, which really boosts your motivation to learn English!
That's the best thing about TOEIC! The more
you study, the higher your score will be.
Hard work pays off! Absolutely!

study method

I'll tell you the study methods I recommend

it is·········

Read lots of English texts
, listen to lots of English
, and speak lots of English.

·········is

Ultimately, it's about getting used to English.
Studying only for the TOEIC won't improve your English skills.
"Haste makes waste."

Read a lot of English

I recommend DMM Eikaiwa because you can use their DAILY NEWS materials for free!
You can access them from here.

If you encounter any words you don't understand, look them up as you go.
Keep reading even if you don't understand everything.
Above all, just persevere with determination and willpower.

I also try to read at least one article a day!!

Listen to English a lot

I would definitely recommend the "DUO 3.0" textbook.
3.0
/ CD for basic learning
DUO 3.0 / CD for review

This teaching material is a groundbreaking book that compiles 1,572 important words and 997 important phrases into 560 English sentences with no duplication, based on the theme of the Japanese "Iroha Song."

First, read through all 560 headlines until you can translate them into Japanese!
After that, use the audio from the basic CD and listen to it repeatedly.
I dedicated all my time outside of work to this.
Patience is key!

Speak English a lot

This might be the most important thing when it comes to understanding English...
Speaking aloud is crucial for understanding a language!!

The "DUO 3.0" textbook will be helpful here as well.
After listening to the audio on the basic CD, try speaking English aloud.

Shadowing and overlapping training are effective

What is overlapping?

Overlapping is a training method where you read the English text and pronounce it simultaneously with the audio.
It's recommended to start with this method.
Ultimately, aim to memorize the English text and train without looking at it!

What is shadowing?

Shadowing is a training method where you speak English audio slightly behind the written text.
It might be a little difficult at first, but it will improve your listening comprehension.
Let's persevere!

Shadowing and overlapping are training methods that improve listening comprehension.
The TOEIC listening section is relatively easy, so if you want to easily raise your score, focusing on these two methods is sufficient!

bonus

Watching foreign films might be the best way to improve your English in a fun way.
However, make sure the subtitles are in English.
Of course, the audio should also be in English.

My recommendation is the movie "The Terminal" starring Tom Hanks.
It's a comedy about a man whose passport becomes invalid and who gets stuck in an airport, and the interactions he has with his friends.
The English used is relatively easy, so I think it's a good starting point.

Another option might be listening to Western music.
I personally like bands like "Children Of Bodom" and "EXTREME," and I used to look up the meaning of their lyrics in a dictionary.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it's effective or not..

summary

This article ended up being quite vague, didn't it?...
But I still think that training is crucial when it comes to English.
I believe that you can only truly master it by studying diligently and persistently.

Well then!!
