Things I wish I had done as an engineer after graduating with no experience
nice to meet you!
My name is Yoshida and I joined the company in 2024 with no prior experience
I'm sure there are people who are worried, thinking, " I've been offered a job in the IT industry, but I don't know if I can actually do it ."
Before I joined the company, my anxiety grew as the day approached
This time , I'll share some things I wish I had done differently , based on my experience as an engineer who has actually been with the company for a year
Organizing your desk

First, the first thing is to organize your desk area
I myself have experienced a vicious cycle where my anxiety would become overwhelming, making me unable to do anything, which in turn would only increase my anxiety further
I think starting with the outward appearance is a very effective first step in alleviating anxiety !
Organizing your desk areaextremely important for working efficiently.
Especially when working as an engineer, it is essential to create an environment that increases concentration and improves productivity
Therefore, I recommend buying a mouse, keyboard, and other items you'll need once you join the company, andorganizing your desk area!
Be mindful of the balance between work and personal life

The second is to be conscious of the balance between work and personal life
Once you join the company, you will spend a total of 9 hours a day at the office, consisting of 8 hours of work and 1 hour of break
Let's say it takes one hour to travel to and from work and eight hours of sleep
In addition, disposable time for breakfast, dinner, bath time, etc. will be a total of two hours
This meansavailable per day4 hoursyou'll have.
Therefore,to spend the day without a purposewasteit's.
Imagine a typical day's schedule after joining the company, and write down what you were able to accomplish and what you weren't !
Also, I recommend thinking about " why you could n't do something" when you've had the opportunity to do something, as this can be very useful in your work !
Use easy-to-understand language in conversation

The last point is to "use words that are easy to understand in conversation."
When talking with friends, you may use casual expressions, and your brain may automatically translate what you are trying to say
Therefore, I think it's easy for the message to get across unintentionally
I think it's important to be mindful of using easy-to-understand language when talking with friends !
I myself sometimes omit particles like "teni," and "wo" when talking to friends, and I had a lot of trouble with this after becoming a working adult.
Even a single mistake in grammar can change the meaning and lead to a misunderstanding with the other person .
Here's an example
- This process is fine .
- This processisfine.
"de," you can see that there are no problems with the processing.
In the case of "は", there appears to be no problem with the process itself, but problems seem to be occurring in other processes
Therefore,I believe it's important to develop the habit of reviewing what you've written!
In my case, I write it up in a place where only I can see it before sending the message in chat
Afterwards, if you reread it after some time has passed, you can read the text more objectively !
If you reread it and feel something is off, correct it and then read it again after some time has passed
By doing the above,we were able to minimize misunderstandings with the other party!
Finally
Thank you for watching until the end!
I totally understand the anxiety you feel before joining the company!
Looking back, there are many things I wish I had prepared for when I took my first steps as an engineer
I hope that these experiences will be of some help to those who are about to enter the world of engineering
