[Telework] I held an LT tournament online [Beyond study session #23]
My name is Kai Fujisawa, and I'm in charge of public relations and recruitment, and I got a new desk and chair to avoid back pain.
Now, how many weeks have you been working from home?
One month has passed in the blink of an eye since the state of emergency was declared, and with the extension of the state of emergency until the end of May announced, it is finally time for us to prepare our work environment at home in earnest.
This is my first experience of working from home all the time, and I am realizing that there are various obstacles to teleworking, such as lack of concentration, feelings of loneliness, back pain, and swelling of the legs.
However, I also realized that home is the best place to write a blog or read long texts and digest them.
I started to feel like I wanted to share with others what I was experiencing while working from home , decided to hold a Beyond study session from home.
Home de LT Tournament - Teach us your remote work know-how! ~ Beyond study session #23
Six gorgeous speakers gathered in the LT slot to explore the question, "How is everyone working from home!?"
- “A story about a company information session held in an online game” Beyond Co., Ltd. Umi Fujisawa
- "I was originally OK with remote control, but now I've stopped going outside completely." Norihisa Kuwano, monoAI technology Co., Ltd.
- "Mr. Abe said 'transformation'." Hiroki Horikoshi, Mynet Co., Ltd.
- "My mom has forgotten the cause of her stress. Can you think about it with me?" Jun Otsuka, former supercell
- “Important mindset for organizations working remotely” Mr. Haruo Sato, B-Proud Co., Ltd.
- "Atsume WFH Forest. X week of recluse life" Daiki Morishima, Unity Technologies Japan LLC
- “What’s the difference between a ZOOM drinking party and an online bar?” Vampire Co., Ltd. Yohei Kato
Most of the participants were from Tokyo, and they are such an amazing group of people that this event would not have been possible unless it was done online.
Approximately 80 people participated on the day, and various telework know-hows were discussed.

This time, I tried a Beyond study session online for the first time.
- What is different from a regular study session
- Advantages Disadvantages
- Attitudes of organizers and participants
I tried to write down what I felt as an administrator.
Moderator and Gaya are required for operation
In a normal study session, it is enough to just be the moderator, but if you lead an online event by yourself, quite lonely .
It feels like I'm sitting at home talking to myself forever.
Therefore, the management team needs at least one "Gaya" to answer questions asked by the moderator.
You may also want to divide up the roles, such as picking up chat comments, checking the number of participants, checking the time, and playing background music.
When online, the cancellation rate is low.
In the study sessions we have held in the past, about 30% of the participants either canceled on the day of the event or did not show up without contacting us.
However, this time the number of participants was almost the same as the number of applications.
think the biggest advantage of online events is that you don't have to cut off work and go all the way to the venue, and you can participate from home while working.
Make it participatory by sharing preliminary questionnaires
This time, in the preliminary survey, we asked the question, ``Please tell us about your telework know-how.''
We compiled the responses we gathered into slides and shared them, and tried to make it as participatory as possible online.
When you're online, it's easy to get distracted just by sitting and watching, and you can do whatever you want, like watching TV or looking at your smartphone. You will need some ingenuity.
Zoom has a "breakout room" feature, so it might be a good idea to split up into several people and do group work.
I find it difficult to get excited when talking from home.
When the scheduled time arrives and it's time to start the study session, I get really excited.
The other day, I went to watch an online seminar that someone else was giving, and it turned out that regardless of the content, I tend to remember the content better when I hear someone with a cheerful voice (Although it may not be related to online)
Therefore, it would be better to try and speak with about 5 times as much excitement as usual.
At this study session, Mr. Otsuka stood up and gave a presentation, so I thought I would try to emulate him next time.

Gather participants' reactions through chat
The biggest challenge with online study sessions is not knowing how participants will react.
So, at the beginning, I announced, ``Please write in the Jan-Jan chat!'', and while I was on stage, I picked up small posts in the chat, and used Zoom's ``reaction'' function to encourage applause and likes. spoke in a slightly different way.
Practice screen sharing
``It takes a lot of time to share my screen'' is the number one online complaint.
Actually, it took me a while even though I thought I was used to it.
So be sure to share your screen and check your audio before starting.
Presentation materials should not be boring
Listening to people online is exhausting.
If you keep looking at the same slide page, you'll get bored and won't be able to think about it.
Therefore, this time's materials have more pictures , and the transitions are faster.
As a result, even though I only spoke for 20 minutes, I ended up with 78 pages of materials.
The trick to changing the layout of each online study session material is to keep it fresh for the viewer.
We strongly recommend that you take more time than usual to prepare your materials.
Since there are no social gatherings, chatting is not possible.
It's great that online study sessions don't require cleaning up, but I feel a little sad that we can't have social gatherings.
Even if someone you know is participating, you can't casually talk to them and ask them what they think.
So, I realized once again that the purpose of actually gathering at a venue and holding an event is to ``expand the community.''
Let's make horizontal connections at social gatherings and hold new events like this! I've been thinking about creating opportunities like this online as well.

summary
Points to keep in mind during online study sessions
- A clear division of roles between the moderator and Gaya
- The story develops quickly and the material keeps you from getting bored.
- Both management and participants use chat to make it participatory
If you keep these three things in mind, your online event will be successful.
If you set up a time to replace a social gathering (such as a workshop in a breakout room), the community may expand and become even better.
I will continue to work from home in May, but I would like to try something new and interesting at a time like this.
We also plan to hold online study sessions, so thank you for your continued support!
(Next, I will write an article about an in-house social gathering using Minecraft)
