How do I subscribe on Shopify?
Subscription businesses are extremely effective in increasing LTV. Even if you decide to get started, your business model will change, so you'll need to reassess your systems and the metrics you should be looking at
Developing a system in-house is costly, but Shopify apps solve this issue because subscriptions are available simply by installing them
Until now, the only apps that allowed users to start subscriptions on Shopify were made overseas, and they required translating the English into Japanese
Therefore, Huckleberry, which has developed seven apps to date, released a "Subscription" app in February 2021 that is fully compatible with Japanese and includes all the necessary functions for subscription services. It
has already been installed in over 3,000 stores, and many stores are able to easily start a subscription business with it.
What is a "Subscription" app?
"Subscription" app is the most installed Japanese subscription app. One store even achieved monthly sales of 20 million yen within two months of introducing this app. Its main features are as follows:
● 7,300 Store Operation Know-How Incorporated into App Features
-
In addition to "Subscriptions," Huckleberry offers 10 Shopify apps, used by over 7,300 stores, making it the No. 1 app vendor in Japan. Because
of this, Huckleberry understands the challenges of running a Shopify store better than any other company, and has seen many successful store case studies. Therefore, the "Subscriptions" app is packed with the experience and knowledge gained from working with many stores. We
are constantly developing and updating the features that are truly necessary for the success of your subscription business.
● Highly acclaimed customer support
-
They provide complete support, from technical support for implementation and customization to sharing the know-how necessary to successfully implement a subscription model.
100% of questions are answered within two business days.
Support is available via email as well as online meetings.
● Extensive integration with external services
-
The "Subscription" app offers extensive integration with external services. For example, it can integrate with LINE and Klaviyo, as well as Next Engine. Further integrations with various other services are planned for the future.
"Subscription" function
The "Subscription" app is packed with features that are great for both stores and customers. Here are some of them.
If you'd like a more detailed explanation of the features, hereplease download our comprehensive guide for free
| First-time discount feature | By being able to change the products delivered in your first shipment and those delivered afterwards, you can also create plans such as selling samples in your first shipment, or offering ●● and ▲▲ in your first shipment and only ●● from your second shipment onwards |
| Membership rank function | Membership ranks can be set based on the amount of purchases made by customers, which is expected to increase customer retention rates |
| My Page | Your My Page has all the necessary functions, such as skipping, canceling, adding or deleting products, and changing delivery dates |
| CRM Integration | By linking with LINE and email apps, you can send messages segmented by customer retention or status (utilizing Shopify's email app "Klaviyo" and LINE-linked app "Social Plus") |
| Reporting and Analysis | Customer analysis is possible through dashboard analysis and CSV export of subscription data |
| Migration Features | It is possible to migrate not only from overseas apps but also from other domestic apps. Since contract information can be transferred as is, customers do not have to reapply and migration is possible with zero customer drop-off. |
How to install
This "subscription purchase" app has a variety of functions. Installation and initial setup takes just 5 steps
■ Installing the App:
the Shopify app store and click "Add app" from the details page of your subscription app. Then, allow the connection and proceed with the setup according to the instructions on the dashboard.
① Easy installation to your theme!
After installing the app, the first step is to install the template to your shop's theme so that the subscription button can be displayed.
With the "Easy Installation" feature, you can display subscription plans on your shop's product details and cart pages simply by clicking the install button. There's no need to edit Liquid, so you don't have to ask an engineer. If you'd like to set it up manually, customer support will guide you through the process based on your theme
② Let's create a membership ranking system!
It's said that the cost of acquiring new customers is higher than the cost of acquiring repeat customers. Since these customers have already made regular purchases, you want to increase their loyalty so that they become valuable customers, right?
In subscription apps, you can set membership ranks based on the number of orders. You can set discounts for each rank, which can lead to an increase in repeat customers. It also helps prevent cancellations
In the "Member Rank" tab, segment by the following conditions:
• Rank name
• Promotion conditions (cumulative order amount)
• Discount rate (percentage setting)
③ Let's create a subscription plan!
Once the installation is complete, register your subscription business model from the "Plans" tab.
On the plan settings screen, you can register multiple subscription plans such as "monthly delivery" or "weekly shipping," and you can also set detailed items to accommodate a variety of products. Set the following:
- Create plan groups (groups to which multiple plans can be linked)
- Set purchase interval (selectable from daily/weekly/monthly/yearly)
- Minimum number of purchases (selectable from 0 to 100)
- Maximum number of purchases (selectable from unlimited to 100)
- Set discounts (selectable from none/specified discount amount/percentage)
- First-time discount (selectable from none/specified discount amount/percentage)
Once you create a plan, you will be able to select which plan to associate with each product from the product management page
④ Link your products to plans!
You can assign subscription plans to your products from the product management page.
You can also set whether or not one-time purchases are available from the product management page.
⑤ Test the functionality and then sell the product!
At this point, you should be able to offer the product as a recurring purchase. Test the functionality in test mode and then sell the product!
If you are having trouble purchasing the product through recurring purchase, please contact support.

Please tell us why you introduced the "subscription" app.
- Originally, we were using other overseas subscription apps, but we were worried because the member page was still in English even at the last minute before the launch. Even using translation apps, we couldn't translate it properly, so we ended up giving up.
In the midst of all that, we discovered the first Japanese-made subscription app and thought, "This is it!" The fact that it was available in Japanese and that we could use the subscription function just by adding the app was very appealing.
In terms of functionality, (at the time of the app launch) it was good because it included essential functions such as the ability to select the frequency of subscriptions, discounts, and the ability for customers to skip/cancel subscriptions.

How was the support when you introduced the "subscription" app?
- It was extremely good!
The reason it was good was that they handled our inquiries directly via ZOOM. With most apps, you don't know when you'll get a reply or when the problem will be solved, so we were surprised that we had such support for the first time! The response was also very quick, which was helpful.

Please tell us what prompted you to introduce the "Subscription" app and details about the products you sell.
・We decided to introduce a subscription system for customers who purchase the same products every month, such as daily necessities and supplements. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, many customers who purchased products in stores and liked them are now purchasing them online and switching to a subscription.
We chose your company's app because it supports Japanese and Japanese yen. We thought it was overwhelmingly easier to use than overseas products.
Currently, we are using the "Subscription" app to sell domestically produced organic products and products that have obtained major organic certifications from around the world on a subscription basis.

How was the support when introducing the "Subscription" app? Please tell us what you felt and what you liked about it.
・The responses to our questions were very thorough.
We were anxious because we were introducing it while our EC site was still under development, but the speed of response when problems occurred was excellent. Thank you very much.

Please tell us about the effects after introducing the "Subscription" app.
・Because the number of shipments can be predicted in advance, it has become easier to secure product inventory. Furthermore, approximately 10% of sales have shifted to subscription purchases, leading to stable revenue.
