[System Development] What the Beyond Development Department values [Tomotsuku]

Hello

Our team's season has come to an early end, and the much-anticipated draft meeting has also come to an end, so
I'm now in a situation where all I can do is keep an eye on free agent developments. I'm Sato, manager of the systems development department.

Even though I felt like a hollow shell, I was asked to write a blog, so I decided to do so for the first time in a long time

Beyond's management philosophy is "To create and support together."
*Abbreviated to "Tomotsuku."

Corporate philosophy

https://beyondjapan.com/company/philosophy

, I would like to write about our stance on "Tomotsuku" in the System Development Department, which is considered a militant group within Beyond

*The content is purely my personal opinion

[Basic principle] Make it properly

Thanks to you, we have received consultations on a wide variety of topics

The consultations we receive range from those with a specific goal in mind to those with vague ideas, such as, "Are you talking about a grand dream?"
, and the literacy levels of our clients vary.

We are professionals, so once we have decided to do it, we will do our best .

Once the system is complete, we communicate closely with our customers to ensure that it doesn't end up being difficult to use, and we approach development by thinking not just from the perspective of an engineer but also from the perspective of the system's user

Our engineers devote themselves to daily training in order to remain a "development team that can create things properly," rather than one of the many fake development companies out there

Oh, I'm also writing this for our in-house engineers

To achieve this, we consider the following three points to be important

Would you like to work with me?

The first thing I think is important is whether we can talk on an equal footing.

We are not a subcontractor . We believe that when there is a need for development, there is a reason that you cannot do it yourself and that is why you come to us for advice.

As professionals, we discuss with our clients what is necessary to bring the project to fruition on an equal footing, and in return, we take responsibility for completing the project. Naturally, we take pride in this

We will clearly explain what we can and cannot do. From there, we will be able to discuss on an equal footing how far we can both compromise and where we can land. Unless we can do so, nothing will solidify

One of the parties will end up moving forward with a sense of discomfort or unreasonableness.
Projects that don't go well are often due to kind of communication discord we place great importance on having a client with whom we can have a clear discussion.

We believe in equality not only with our clients who do business with us, but also with our partner companies who sometimes help us with development

I believe that there is no such thing as a superior or inferior when it comes to creating something good.
In order to create something good, I think it is important that everyone involved in the project is on an equal footing.

Rather than the size of the company or its name value, we believe that it is the people who make us want to work together that matter most.

In recent years, many meetings have been held online, but we would like to meet in person at least once if possible so that we can get to know each other better

I don't do work just to get money

I don't participate in the money game

Unless there is a special reason, we generally do not sell our technology at a discount.
Of course, we do not charge excessive profits or take referral fees without actually developing the product.

If you're only looking for a price, feel free to look elsewhere

We also take responsibility for our development, so we ask that companies working with us on development be prepared to pay the necessary amount

It is very rare that we are willing to do a job simply to match the price.
As professionals, we want to take pride in our work . We don't have the mindset of doing anything just because we're paid.

As we primarily do contract development, we cannot survive without receiving work requests from our clients.
However, we believe that hiring and training engineers is just as difficult, if not more so.

I think it's very important that engineers are convinced of the project

Time, money, and labor are traded off

For example, it takes time to prepare an estimate

Sometimes people ask me for a quote by tomorrow or this week, but frankly, that's impossible. We can't guarantee accuracy.

In order to realize what the customer is thinking, the engineers will carefully consider various aspects, build up the functions, and provide estimates for the man-hours required (as they cannot do anything randomly)

I've been in sales for many years, so I think I have a general understanding of this, but I don't think you'll usually find yourself in a situation where you need a quote today or tomorrow

I think they should have known that they needed a quote at least a week in advance. I
don't understand why they didn't come to me at that point. it from the other person's perspective

If it is absolutely necessary, we will provide a rough estimate.
When providing a rough estimate, we will refine any parts that are not yet fully finalized during the requirements definition.

Once we have a clear understanding of the functions that need to be created, we confirm and reach an agreement with each other to ensure there are no discrepancies in what we want to do, and then we create another estimate

If the deadline and budget are met at this point, there is no problem, but if it exceeds expectations, you will need to consider cutting out functions or carrying them over to the next phase

In exchange for giving up something, we also need the customer to give us something

In our case, the "All-inclusive campaign for the same price" is not a service that we offer on a regular basis

Of course, there are cases where we are willing to go out of our way to cooperate with strategic projects or clients, but fundamentally, we believe that there will be a trade-off between what we can do and what we cannot do depending on what we prioritize

It's easy to say, "I'll do my best, I'll do anything,"
but I think it would be the worst for both parties if you start and then find out, "It just wasn't possible after all."

What engineers aim for

I've been writing in a very arrogant manner up to this point, but I'm not an engineer. It's the engineers who actually turn customer requests into reality

What I have written today is more about my stance as a salesperson protecting our in-house engineers

We believe that if our engineers can work positively, it will lead to positive development for our customers

As a non-engineer, I see them as wizards who can create systems that don't exist yet

In order to properly realize your customers' requests, you need to learn how to use magic correctly.

First of all, it is important to have a basic technical ability the communication skills to convey that ability and the consideration to be able to imagine the other person's position

Sometimes I need to express my opinion as a professional rather than just following what the client says.
To do this, I believe it is necessary to acquire the knowledge and experience to back it up

If you are reluctant to make the effort and choose the easy option, we will continue to provide strict guidance from time to time

We want our employees to not only be protected, but also to develop the ability to properly interact with customers as professional engineers.
This is also a trade-off.

our engineers to aim to become engineers who can succeed anywhere.

Rather than being forced to do work, we take responsibility for the services we are involved in and create and develop them together with our customers.

This is the direction that the engineers in the Beyond Development Department are aiming for, and we believe that they will become engineers who can be successful anywhere

I want to create an environment where these magicians can freely and comfortably demonstrate their abilities

[Summary] In other words, this is what

I've written a lot with a strong emphasis, but as professionals, the Beyond Development Department aims to "manufacture" products while staying close to our customers.

● We develop a system that can actually be used once it is completed.
Development is not the end; after release, we continue to work together to improve it.

and take the same level of pride as our customers in the services they develop, rather than just being forced to do the work

If we can maintain a good relationship up to this point, the service will start to run smoothly

result,

● Receive a price that is acceptable to both parties

I think "continuing to create and support together" means.

I've written this in a very clear manner.
This is the stance we take as a company, but if you think it's a good idea, we'd love to hear from you about system development! (laughs)
