I want to be surrounded by nature..
I want to breathe fresh air...(?)
If you've lived in the city for a long time, have thoughts like this crossed your mind?
Hello.
This is Goto from the Web Service Division.
On a personal note, it has already been two years since I left my parents' home in the countryside and started living in Namba
Needless to say, Namba is a concrete jungle, but as a person who has lived there for two years,
- There's no sense of the seasons (you barely notice the autumn leaves, etc.)
- The atmosphere is always somewhat hectic (you could even say lively)
- There are almost no periods of silence (it feels like it's noisy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year)
It was something like that
The city is so convenient that you can find anything within walking distance, and I think I might never be able to go back to living in the countryside...but at the same time, I feel like I've lost something compared to when I lived in the countryside
One day, I decided to visit the Beyond Shikoku office in August 2022
Little did I know at the time that I would soon realize what "something" I had lost while living in the city
So, in this article, we will tell you about the following:
- What is the working environment like at a satellite office?
- What is rural life like?
- What kind of place is Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture?
- What is the environment like at Beyond's Shikoku office?
- Voices of engineers working at the Miyoshi satellite office
Please continue to watch!
What is a satellite office like?
Some of you may be wondering what a satellite office is in the first place
That's what happened to me too. There are quite a few words that you think you know
From now on, I will be careful not to say things like "attend" or "agenda" without fully understanding their meaning
Well, I asked Google what satellite office means and found out the following:
A satellite office is an office located away from the main headquarters of a company or organization.
It is named after the idea that the office exists like a satellite when viewed from the main headquarters.
*Source: Trial Satellite Office | Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
It's exactly the same, but is it basically like a branch office
I was curious about this, so I looked into it and found the following:
While satellite offices are used as work locations according to the convenience and requests of employees, branch offices and subsidiaries have different purposes: employees work at fixed work locations set by the company, allowing them to efficiently carry out sales activities in a specific area
To put it simply, a satellite office is a place where you can work as if you were at the head office, even if you are located far away from the head office .
Indeed, I believe Beyond's Shikoku office is exactly that kind of place
Beyond currently has offices in Osaka, Yokohama, Canada, and Shikoku, but all locations are constantly connected via online conferencing tools, allowing seamless communication with members who are away from the office as needed (excluding Canada due to the time difference)
Since IT companies tend to be concentrated in urban areas, satellite offices are an environment that allows engineers to combine the best of both city and country life
What kind of place is Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture?
At the beginning, I mentioned that I visited Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture in August 2022, and the trigger for this was an "hourcation .
You might be wondering what that is, but ourcation Awa (Awa) and workation .
Roughly speaking, it is a project that allows you to learn about Tokushima through a program, and by participating in it, I have come to really like Tokushima
During my workcation, I was able to learn about many different aspects of Tokushima
If you would like to know more about Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, or if you are interested in what workcation is all about, please also take a look at the article below
I participated in an hourcation, a journey to explore the possibilities of local business.
We also introduce workcations in our Vlogs

A visit to Beyond's Shikoku office
This is where the main topic begins
This time, I visited the Shikoku office for the first time as part of an office visit
I was driving to the office
The scenery along the way had such a touristy feel that I found myself repeatedly asking myself, "Am I on my way to the office?"

I sometimes when entering information into my navigation system and end up going somewhere completely unrelated , so I was quite suspicious.
I thought this was the wrong way around
When we heard the voice on the car navigation system say, "You have arrived at your destination," the first
No, it's a ryokan. I guess I got it wrong after all. I'll check the address again
I was about to open my smartphone, but when I looked more closely, I saw the " beyond " logo on the inn.
Yes, this inn was the Beyond Shikoku office
Please take a look at the actual exterior of our Shikoku office

This unexpectedly antique-looking building was the Beyond Shikoku office

Looking out from the entrance, you will see this view
I feel like I'm on a trip
By the way, the Shikoku office is located in the former Masaumi Ryokan, and it seems that the original location of the inn is now being used as a satellite office building for several companies
From here on, we will be showing you the inside of the former Masaumi Ryokan. Please bear with us as we post photos

This is the view from the entrance

This is the hallway on the first floor. It's a typical inn, but once you open the door, it's an office, which is a strange space. (That's great!)

I went out into the courtyard

It has a charm that makes you forget the midsummer heat

I'll go up to the second floor
The view from the stairs. I like the way the Japanese and Western styles are mixed together

The pendant lights are also stylish

The view from the second floor is also nice. It has a bit of a school-like atmosphere

You can see the beautiful countryside view from the window. It's so relaxing

This is Beyond's office on the second floor. I'd only ever seen it on a screen, but I had no idea it was actually like this
The sunshine is good and it's very relaxing
Interview! The voice of an infrastructure engineer who actually lives in Miyoshi
So far I have been introducing the satellite office in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture from my own perspective, but what I'm more interested in is what the people who actually work there have to say, right?
So, we asked Mizusawa, who is the leader of Beyond Shikoku office, what it was like working there!

▲ Yoshihiro Mizusawa joined Beyond around summer 2020
The following is Mizusawa's comment
Generally speaking, "country life" is often perceived as inconvenient compared to living in the city, but I've never found it too inconvenient, as I can get to Kansai in 3.5 hours by express bus or just under 2 hours by train
It depends on your lifestyle, but there are supermarkets and major convenience stores within walking distance, so I personally don't need a car at the moment. There aren't many chain restaurants, but there are plenty of delicious independently owned restaurants. I especially love Nonno e Nonna, a stone-oven pizza restaurant
Compared to urban areas, there are still fewer opportunities to meet engineers, so I would like to create more in the future. Although it is online, I often communicate with members of the Osaka office over the screen. Compared to cities, there are fewer opportunities to increase horizontal connections between engineers, so I think this is where you need to be proactive
Personally, I like the following points about living in Miyoshi:
- Tokushima City, Kagawa, Ehime, Kochi and other central areas of Shikoku can be reached in just a few hours by train
- Thanks to the real estate company that introduced me to the apartment, I am now living in a 2LDK apartment for 35,000 yen (no communication fees)
- Surrounded by nature, you can live in a quiet environment
- There are plenty of activities that combine nature (especially rafting in the summer)
What do you think?
Personally, I'm super jealous of how cheap the rent is (although it seems like it was a lucky break, so not everyone can afford to live in this price range)
The Beyond Shikoku office is an extraordinary space filled with the charm of rural life
This concludes our introduction to the Beyond Shikoku office
What did you think?
My own impression is that I have lived in the countryside for over 20 years, so I have a bit of a countryside complex , but even for someone like me, there was a charm to the place that made me think, "The countryside is great after all. "
The view was amazing, of course, but personally I thought the atmosphere was great
Miyoshi City is very quiet and there is no unnecessary information entering my head, so I didn't feel tired as easily
