What is the job of public relations? A few success stories and a lot of failure stories
This is Kai Fujisawa from public relations.
Do you know what public relations work is?
When I joined Beyond, , ``What is a public relations job?'' and I was thinking, ``What would I do if I suddenly became a company's public relations worker?'' A year has passed since I wrote the article.
⇒What would you do if you suddenly became a public relations officer for your company? 2017.12.18
I was suddenly given the job of public relations with no experience as a company employee and no knowledge of IT, and I also worked on marketing and recruitment activities, but when I look back on the past year, I think, ``I wasn't really able to handle the job of public relations.'' Is it true?”
What has helped you grow as a public relations professional?
What exactly is the job of public relations?
still unanswered "What is public relations work?" I would like to share with you success stories and many failures in my work in public relations , including the marketing and recruitment activities I have undertaken over the past year. .
What I worked on this past year
This is the work I have been doing as a public relations officer since I joined the company.
- Email newsletter
- SNS
- press release
- blog
- study session
- exhibition
- HP renewal
- Recruitment activities
When looking at the job description, questions such as ``What is the difference between marketing and public relations?'' and ``Does recruitment also fall under public relations?'' However, there is no clear distinction or difference between the two. I feel like it's okay.
I look back on public relations, marketing, and recruitment as all connected.
little success story
・Your blog has been featured in search engines!
The blog article I wrote now appears on the first page of search results.
For example, if you search for the keyword ``infrastructure engineer study,'' an article written for recruitment titled ``How to study for an infrastructure engineer who obtained a qualification within one month of joining the company'' will appear on the first page.
Even if you're an early blog who didn't know anything about SEO, when you search for "public relations company" for keywords with low competition, the first page will show "What would you do if you suddenly became a company's public relations officer?" ” article has appeared.
By the way, this article was also written using keywords such as "public relations work."
the result
We have increased inquiries! (I'm not sure if the blog is effective or not)
Even if they don't contact us, I think more people have learned about Beyond for the first time from the blog.
In order to get more inquiries from blogs in the future, we need to increase the number of technical articles related to services, not just recruitment and event articles.
many failure stories
・Natural disappearance of e-mail newsletters
Get news about Beyond every other week! So, one month after joining the company, I started sending out e-mail newsletters without knowing what was right and what was left, but it was unpopular and disappeared naturally after about six months.
When I thought about it, I didn't read e-mail newsletters, and very few people around me read other companies' e-mail newsletters.
▲I was distributing announcements, blogs, etc.
・The natural disappearance of the pledge to “update Twitter once a day”
It disappeared so quickly that I don't even know if it lasted for 3 days or not.
There is no story! I've hit a wall and am only getting notifications about blog updates.
However, over the past year, my number of followers has increased by about 20.
・Forgotten press releases
People said, ``It would be great if we could issue a press release every month,'' and we distributed three articles in February, April, and May.
However, no press release was issued after that.
This is because we did not release any new services or think of any new plans.
The existence of press releases was then forgotten.
・The blog’s “Isn’t it okay if I just do a few things?” feeling
To be honest, some of the 20 articles have content that I find myself thinking, ``Isn't there a need to write this?''
(Articles that simply report on the creation of an in-house DJ)
⇒[In-house system] An in-house DJ has been created.
・Only speak to family members at social gatherings after study sessions
We also hold social gatherings at each Beyond study session sponsored by our company
Even though the social gathering was an opportunity to deepen interaction with the customers who came, there was an incident where I didn't have the courage to talk to the customers myself and ended up talking to someone in the company.
In other words, I was taking the easy way out.
You can talk to your relatives at any time, so as with public relations, you need to have a wide range of connections.
・Over budget due to attending too many exhibitions
2018 was the year we exhibited at the most events ever, including Game Creators Conference , Google Cloud Next , and Tokyo Game Show
As a result, the marketing budget was exceeded.
However, it is certain that the company's name recognition has increased by exhibiting at the event.
・I can't explain my services even if I'm standing at a booth at an exhibition.
At trade shows, we usually introduce our services to customers who come to our booth.
When I first stood at the Tokyo Game Show booth
"This is a company that operates and maintains cloud servers."
I have been able to explain this so far.
but
“Where do you start and end the API development?”
When asked complicated questions such as
「?」
So, I ended up asking my boss for help.
If you can't explain your company's services, you're disqualified from public relations...I'll do my best next year.
・Recruitment is handled by people with no job hunting experience
I first joined Beyond as a part-time worker and then became a full-time employee, so I have never looked for a job.
However, as a recruitment officer, I conduct interviews and school visits.
It wasn't a waste of time, right?
These are some success stories and many failures in the public relations work I worked on in 2018.
I've made many mistakes, but I want to believe that none of my attempts were pointless.
I will always keep in mind what I learned this year so that I can make up for it next year.
next year's resolutions
- go out anyway
- Think of a new plan and execute it
I feel that these two things are what we need to do in 2019.
When I think about ``What is the work of public relations after all?'', I would like to call any act of ``spreading information about the company to the outside world'' without deciding that ``this is the job of public relations.''
So instead of doing public relations myself, I approach my work with the idea that all employees have a role in public relations!
