Finding time to write a blog, deciding on a blog theme...there are many challenges to writing one blog
I would like to ask Kawa-san from Blog Master's System Solutions Department how he finds time to write his blog and how he efficiently carries out his work
Komatsu
Thank you Kawa-san!
river
Thank you~
Daily work content
The blog master is also a member of the System Solutions Department, and is an engineer who handles server operation and maintenance on a daily basis
Komatsu
Please tell us about your daily work
river
Broadly speaking, there are four main tasks that I perform on a daily basis
river
The first is responding to customer inquiries, creating procedure manuals, and doing the actual work .
This is my main job, so I spend about 80% of my time doing this.
Komatsu
So that's the most common task you perform as an infrastructure engineer
river
The second handling server construction projects .
Depending on the timing, I may be assigned to a server construction project, so I may also be working on that.
river
The third work on business improvement .
There are some routine tasks involved in operating, maintaining, and monitoring servers, so I am exploring ways to automate these tasks and improve them. I have
also created a system that can automatically send reminders for tasks with approaching deadlines.
Komatsu
It's amazing that they thought about it and made it..
river
The fourth team tasks and member support .
Since we work as a team, we also handle team tasks and support new graduate members.
river
The weight of each task varies from time to time, but I do these four tasks every day.
As for the blog, I work on it little by little whenever I have a little free time and feel like it!
Komatsu
He's a genius at hard work. I'll follow his example
What is important when working as an infrastructure engineer?
Komatsu
Please tell us what you value in your daily work as an infrastructure engineer
river
In particular, we are conscious of not ending things on the surface
Komatsu
What do you mean by on the surface?
river
When a problem occurs on a customer's server and an alert goes off, we try not to just report the results.
Anyone can report the results, and we don't think that's what customers really want.
river
Of course, not everything can be understood or solved immediately, but I try to "always dig deeper" by looking at the fundamental issues, such as "why this alarm is ringing" or "why an error is occurring."
This may be due to the fact that I like to think about why things work in a certain way and what their structure is.
Komatsu
Although our work is different, I am also conscious of pursuing the why, and after listening to Mr. Kawa's talk, I felt that I wanted to be more conscious of this
What I try to do to work efficiently
I myself have often felt that blog masters are people who work efficiently, so this was something that I was very interested in
Komatsu
What are some things you keep in mind when working efficiently?
river
I hadn't really thought about it much, so I took this opportunity to organize my thoughts!
Komatsu
thank you!
river
Broadly speaking, there are five things to keep in mind:
river
The first is to have a moderate amount of tasks.
When you work, various tasks arise every day, but I think it's important to have an amount of tasks that you can control.
Komatsu
This is surprisingly difficult
river
If I take on everything and end up exceeding my capacity and unable to get the work done, it will cause trouble for not only my clients but also my team members.
For this reason, I always carefully consider how much of a task I can handle before taking on any task.
river
The second thing to ask someone for help .
There are many things that you can't figure out on your own. In terms of technology, each engineer has their own area of expertise, so when there's something I can't solve on my own, I make it a point to ask for help and borrow the wisdom of a member who is an expert.
Komatsu
So it's about helping each other. Do people ever ask you about your areas of expertise?
river
It does happen sometimes (laughs). If there are any members who are having trouble with something I know a lot about, I would like to help them
river
The third is to organize and prioritize your tasks .
By organizing your tasks, you can plan your schedule by working backwards, such as by what time you need to complete each task.
Komatsu
I think everyone is doing this consciously, but I feel like there are times when people don't actually do it
river
As I map out the tasks in my head, I assign them to myself, anticipating that other members will follow up.
Also, since there is often work that comes up suddenly, I try to be conscious of leaving some space so as not to cram in too many tasks .
Komatsu
I'd love to peek inside Kawa-san's head!
river
The fourth thing to take proper breaks .
Taking breaks is also important for clearing your mind. If you lose concentration, your productivity will not increase, so I try to take appropriate breaks.
Also, Beyond a siesta system , so I sometimes take advantage of it to get a little sleep and clear my head.
Komatsu
Kawa-san isn't the only one I see sleeping in the break room; I sometimes see other engineers sleeping
river
The fifth point to communicate in the shared spaces .
There are shared spaces where you can take a break, so I try to make an effort to talk to someone during short breaks.
Komatsu
I certainly have the impression that you communicate with a variety of people. So you were doing this on purpose!
river
Well, that's true (laughs). It's common for a deadlock to be resolved or a solution to become visible through casual conversation.
For this reason, I try to be conscious of communicating with my team members, rather than just working silently.
river
Just like the rubber duck effect, talking to a third party can often give you ideas and solve problems, so I think communication is important at Beyond
Komatsu
Most of the things I learned were ones I could be aware of starting today. I would like to think about them again and be mindful of them as I go about my work
About Beyond Blog
How do you decide what to blog about?
Komatsu
Deciding on a blog theme must be difficult, so how do you decide on a theme each month?
river
It's not something I've thought about in particular, it's just a spontaneous idea!
Komatsu
Is that just a random idea?!
river
Yes! When it comes to topics other than technology, rather than thinking hard about writing a blog post, I often come up with ideas for things I like or when I'm relaxing
river
When it comes to technical topics, I try to write about things that I didn't know about while dealing with customers, but that I think other people might be interested in.
As you work every day, there are things you don't know, so the topics you can come up with may actually be endless.
Komatsu
You are definitely a blog master
river
I write a blog every day to share the information I've researched and learned, in the hope that it will be useful to someone (whether inside or outside the company) who may be in the same situation as me
The secret to mass-producing blogs
Komatsu
Kawa-san, you write a blog every month, but is there any reason why you are able to mass-produce it?
river
You may be constantly on the lookout for interesting topics
river
As mentioned above, I often choose topics that I don't understand, but I also Hatena Bookmark , so I often get hints from there.
Because we are a company of engineers, I hope that by choosing topics that are new or interesting technologies, we can create excitement within the company.
Komatsu
That's a great way of thinking! It's true that if there's an interesting technology, people will respond
river
Rather than writing about mainstream topics, I focus on more niche but interesting topics, and I write blogs on a variety of topics in the hope that by reaching or helping just one person, I can make the world a little bit easier
Komatsu
I feel like I got a glimpse into Kawa-san's mind. Thank you very much!
river
Thank you very much
summary
Through this interview, I discovered and learned many new things even from members who I communicate with on a regular basis, and it was very helpful for me as well
In order to work more efficiently, I would like to reconsider my awareness of my daily work. I think that each person's work style and awareness are different, but it might be interesting to think about it again
This concludes our interview with Kawa-san, the blog master and infrastructure engineer!
